Morning suits

Daytime formal wear is referred to as a "morning suit." Although it was originally designed for daytime wear, it now is acceptable for evening weddings as well. The morning coat gives the men in your party a turn-of-the-century appearance and is a popular choice. Traditionally it comprises either a black or grey coat with matching grey and black striped trousers and a pearl grey or light grey waistcoat.

Tailcoats  Tail Coat -'Cutaway' or 'stroller'?

A morning suit with tails This is a ¾ length jacket with tails and a “cutaway” front. (This is different to an evening style tail coat). It originates from the 19th century. Starting life as a riding jacket, the cut away front edges kept the coat out of the way of the rider’s knees whilst the two buttons at the back enabled him to fasten the tails out of the way when on horseback.

Frock Coat: This was first introduced in the early 1800s. It combines tails with straight front edges – the front and back being of equal length. A frock coat is knee length.

Prince Edwards

Prince Edward: This is the modern take on a morning suit – a three quarter length jacket without tails.

Nehru jacket: This a frock coat with a mandarin collar. Known as 'Nouveau' in the Etiquette range.

Evening wear

A tuxedo is a general name often used to refer to all men's evening wear. It is specifically a standard length jacket, single or double breasted with satin lapels. It is suitable for almost all formal occasions, including weddings, prom and tux required events.

It is often referred to a 'dinner jacket' or 'DJ' and can have either a notched lapel or shawl collar.

  • Lapel: On a coat, the turned back material that falls around the front of the coat

  • Notch Lapel: On a coat, a notch is cut out between the collar and the lapel.

  • Peak Lapel: On a coat, the top of the lapel is pointed sharply upward and outward.

  • Shawl collar: A lapel which turns back in one sweep with no notches

Menswear Hire Service - Process

Our Menswear Hire Service is provided by Etiquette Formal Hire. The information below is general information regarding the Hiring process, if you have a more specific query that isn't answered here then please contact us.

  • To help you to choose we like to spend some time with you and your bride-to-be trying discussing various styles and looking through the various samples and swatches available

  •  Once you have decided which outfit and accessories you require we then make arrangements for you to have a fitting. We appreciate that for people with large parties it isn't easy to get everyone in at the same time. Don’t worry we can work round this.

  • Once everyone has been measured we will then place and confirm your order. If you need to add more people or change an outfit then we are able to do this BEFORE your garments are delivered.

  • Your outfits will be delivered to our shop approx. 10 - 12 days before your function. This will allow us plenty of time to get everyone fitted and make sure everything fits.

  • We appreciate that some people change size and shape between the first fitting and the suits arriving (especially children!) so if any item does need replacing then we will arrange this for you at no extra cost.

  •  Once you are happy with our outfits you can then take them away and enjoy your special occasion. The outfits then need to be returned to us the next working day after your function.

  • Should you require your outfit for longer than the normal hire period (i.e. cruise, wedding abroad etc.) system we can provide you with a quote for your period of hire.

  •  Each outfit is also insured leaving you at ease knowing that if anything is spilt or accidentally get broken then you will be fully covered (again especially with children!)

  • Should you require your outfit at short notice then we can also arrange for your outfit to be sent by next day courier However, there is an extra charge for this

Suits arrive two weeks before the wedding to allow for fittings. Garments should be returned within a couple of days, by arrangement. Extended hire can be arranged at an additional 50% cost per extra week.

If you have any questions then please don't hesitate to contact us.
